Vintage Sosaku kokeshi by Kiyohara Takao
This is a beautiful example of a vintage Shingata (Modern/Transitional) Kokeshi doll crafted by the award-winning master artisan Kiyohara Takao (b. 1916). Takao is highly celebrated for bridging the gap between traditional regional styles (like the Tougatta or Yamagata schools) and the creative freedom of the Sosaku movement. Key Characteristics of this Doll: The Head & Expression: It features his signature minimalist and gentle facial expression, characterized by finely painted, peaceful slit eyes and a subtle nose/mouth. The hair is rendered in a clean, traditional bob haircut, keeping the focal point on the doll's quiet, feminine charm. The Body & Texture: Unlike perfectly smooth, glossy kokeshi, this piece utilizes a multi-textured design. The middle section (the kimono) has a beautiful, earthy, and rustic bark-like finish. It is accented with minimalist white plum blossom (ume) motifs and a simple cord tied around the waist (obi). The Base: The bottom section returns to a clean, turned-wood finish, highlighting the natural grain of the wood—a technique highly characteristic of Takao's work, inspired by traditional lathe-turning (Rokuro). Height: 19,5cm Weight: 290g Please look carefully at the pictures to determine the condition of the item.
