Sclerotium Gum; Scleroglucan

Scleroglucan, a naturally occurring polysaccharide, is produced by the fungus Sclerotium rolfsii. It belongs to the group of β-glucans, and its structure comprises a linear backbone of β-(1→3)-linked glucose units with a β-(1→6)-linked glucose side chain every third unit. One of the key properties of scleroglucan is its high molecular weight, which contributes to its viscosity and its ability to form firm gels. Additionally, it exhibits excellent water solubility, shear-thinning behavior, and pseudoplasticity, which is the ability of a substance to reduce in viscosity when stress is applied and regain its viscosity when the stress is removed. Scleroglucan also has remarkable stability under a wide range of conditions, including variations in pH, temperature, and salt concentration. Because of these properties, scleroglucan is often used in applications that require thickening, stabilization, or gelation. In watered-out reservoirs where sea water pressure is no longer sufficient to recover the oil, sclerotium gum improve the process significantly. Lubrication Sclerotium gum lubricates the drill and controls the backpressures created during drilling. Well drilling Sclerotium gum acts as an oil mud thickener and stabilizer, increases the viscosity of very thin oil muds, which cannot otherwise be drilled. Cosmetic Sclerotium gum is used in cosmetics for its thickening, stabilizing, and moisturizing properties, enhancing product texture and skin hydration.
