Peperomia caperata ‘Red Ripple’, native to South America, is a compact plant known for its deeply textured, rippled leaves in shades of burgundy to deep red with a soft, matte finish. What makes this plant special is its rich, moody coloration paired with that pronounced corrugated texture, giving it a dense, sculpted look while staying small and full. Light drives both color depth and how tight the plant stays. Place it in an east or north-facing window where it gets steady, gentle light without direct sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the leaves lose that deep red tone and shift more green, and the plant can open up. Strong, even light keeps the color richer and the growth compact. Watering should stay on the lighter side. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it airy. This plant shows thirst through slight softening of the leaves while they still hold structure. If leaves become mushy or collapse at the base, the roots are staying too wet. If the plant stretches or loses its tight form, it’s reacting to light rather than watering.
