Enicar Sherpa Graph MKIV 072-02-01
Enicar Sherpa Graph MKIV 072-02-01 Introduced in 1960, the Sherpa Graph is perhaps the original iconic motorsport watch. Worn by greats such as Jim Clarke and Stirling Moss, this was long before branding deals. They wore them simply because they were the best tool for the job, and just so happen to be one of the most beautiful mid-century chronographs ever made. They also happen to be one of our favourite Chronographs from this iconic era, for a number of reasons. Firstly, the case is very contemporary. Many iconic sporting chronographs from the era were 36-37mm, while the Sherpa Graph sported a 40.2mm case making it feel quite modern, and perfect for those who feel a 36 is a touch small for them. Secondly, it is powered by one of the great chronograph movements, the Valjoux 72. And thirdly, the designs were just stunning, whether that be the slightly more delicate looking MKI, all the way through the more sporting MKIV. This particular example is an early MKIV, and you can tell this not only by the serial number, but by the dial configuration. MKIII's featured 'paddle' hands, with a 'lollipop' chrono hand. The MKIV features baton style hands, which is one of the reasons is tends to feel the most sporting of the generations, and typically a triangle chrono seconds hand. This particular watch is interesting as it has a very low serial number for the MKIV, and thus carries over the lollipop chrono seconds hand from the MKIII. The reverse-panda dial is in extremely nice condition within it's centre section, with only light wear. The outer tachy scale shows a deep and even patina throughout. All tritium plots are in place, and the hands match perfectly. The steel case is very well preserved, and shows strong lines and even lugs. Shows marks commensurate with age. The case back is also in excellent condition, with clear stamping on the outside and the serial number present and visible. Acrylic domed crystal is in fantastic condition with minor swirls and scratching. Correct signed crown. Comes mounted to what appears to be the original Enicar steel beads of rice bracelet that will fit up to an 7in wrist roughly. Shows quite a bit of stretch as you'd expect, though better than most we see. It also comes with a handmade HANDDN leather strap. Serviced in 2020. Winds very smoothly, and all functions operating as they should. Keeping COSC time at 279 degrees of amplitude measured dial-up on a timegrapher. Water resistance has not been tested. Comes as watch-only, no box or papers. Will include a Watch Vault Cleaning Cloth and Watch Vault Travel Case. A superb example of one of the all time great sports Chronographs.
