The design challenge with a floor-standing poster holder is making it tall enough to read at standing height without making it heavy, bulky or visually intrusive. Most floor-standing sign holders solve this by adding a wide base, a thick pole and a chunky frame that together create a piece of equipment that dominates the space rather than supporting it. This holder takes the opposite approach. The upright is slimline. The frame is minimal. The base is compact at 343mm x 260mm. The visual weight of the entire holder is reduced to the minimum needed to present an A3 poster at 1478mm and keep it standing. The result is a floor-standing holder that looks like a considered piece of interior architecture rather than a sign on a stick. The 7kg weight is concentrated in the 4mm metal base plate at the bottom of the upright. This is the engineering decision that makes the slimline aesthetic possible. A tall, narrow holder is inherently prone to tipping. The weighted base creates a low centre of gravity that counteracts the height and prevents the holder from toppling when people walk past, brush against it with a bag, create a draught by opening a door, or simply move through the space at a normal pace. Base pads on the underside grip the floor surface and prevent the holder from sliding on polished tiles, wooden floors and smooth surfaces. The stability is not obvious from looking at the holder. It becomes obvious the moment you try to push it and it does not move. The poster slides in from the top through a 10mm slot between the 0.6mm clear PVC front sheet and the 2mm black PVC backing sheet. Standard A3 paper, card stock and laminated prints all fit. The clear front sheet displays the poster face to the viewer at standing height. The black backing sheet provides an opaque background that prevents the wall, the corridor or whatever is behind the holder from showing through the poster. The double-sided design means the content is visible from both the front approach and the rear, making the holder effective in corridors, open floor positions, aisle positions and any placement where visitors approach from both directions.
