Imai Keiju (1891-1967), Fallen Leaves and Spider, Japanese hanging scroll
*From the store Falling maple leaves and pine needles drift through the air, with some caught in a spider’s web. Though a bit difficult to see, the pine needles in the upper right are painted in gold. Parts of the maple leaves also contain gold, expressing a shimmering effect as they catch the light. In contrast, the maple leaves and pine needles falling toward the lower left are rendered in more subdued colors. There is a sense of movement within the stillness, capturing the atmosphere of autumn.
