39-Star American Flag Cane Circa 1890 This patriotic collectible cane reflects a pivotal moment in American history. The shaft is made of sleek wood and is finished with a metal ferrule. When the turned knob handle is pulled, a stunning example of a late 19th-century American “flag that never was” is revealed. The flag features 39 stars, a number that never existed on official flag designs. The official American flag shifted from 38 stars to 43 stars, as the Dakotas, Montana, Washington and Idaho each joined the Union, but many manufacturers produced designs for each addition. When this flag was made, many believed that North and South Dakota would be admitted to the Union as one state, and so manufactured flags with 39 stars. Today, the few existing examples of these unofficial flags are quite rare and sought after. 34 7/8" length
