Afghan Sultani Large Rug

This is a brand new authentic Sultani rug, handmade in Afghanistan. Sultani rugs (meaning: regal/kingly) are a relatively modern design which have been introduced in the past 20-30 years in Afghanistan. They take inspiration from the more traditional Ziegler rugs, with a similar detailed floral design. However, the latter has more muted cream and beige colours, while Sultani rugs have bolder colours such as yellow, purple and turquoise, on a grey background. This is a characteristic design of Sultani rugs. They are woven using the asymmetrical Turkish (Ghiordes) knot and often have a medium-low pile to bring out the detailed fine design. They also use fine wool, which gives the rugs a lustre. These rugs are produced in the northern provinces of Afghanistan of Mazari-Sharif and Andkhoy.
