La Bicicleta Voladora Tempranillo Blanco

From Dylan at Little Thing Wine: La Bicicleta Voladora is a project from German Blanco—his other wineries are Casa Aurora and Quinta Milu—in the easternmost subregion of Rioja. The grapes are all certified organic; the style is uncomplicated and delicious, designed to be drunk young. This is not textbook Rioja, but it is still very worthy of our time and appreciation Tempranillo Blanco is a mutation of our usual red Tempranillo. It didn’t even exist until 1988—me too!—when it was found on a regular Tempranilo vine. Just a cluster of yellow-green grapes amongst the red and bam! New variety. Now, nearly 40 years later, these grapes have been planted in other vineyards, and German Blanco has taken a particular liking to this thick-skinned variety. Aged in concrete, this is a textural white that still maintains a lot of vivaciousness. It shows almond and chamomile and pollen galore, but also green apple and lemon zest and a delightful herbal edge. Look further and you can even find some hints of sunset pink, like strawberry and golden plums. I love exploring medium-and-full bodied white wines without extreme oak presence.
