Puer tea comes from Yunnan Province in southwestern China, where tea has been grown and traded for centuries. Unlike most teas, Puer is known for its ability to age and transform over time, developing deeper and more complex flavours. There are two main styles: Sheng Puer (raw) – which ages naturally over many years Shu Puer (ripe) – which undergoes a controlled fermentation process Shu Puer was developed in the 1970s as a way to replicate the character of aged raw Puer in a shorter period. Through careful fermentation, the leaves develop the smooth, earthy depth that Puer drinkers love. If you want to know more about the Yunnan Province tea region, see our article: Yunnan Province, China What “Palace Grade” Means The term Palace (Gong Ting) refers to the grade of the leaf used. Palace grade Puer is made from very small, tender buds and young leaves, resulting in a tea that is smoother, softer, and often sweeter than larger-leaf grades. These finer leaves produce a cleaner, more refined infusion while still maintaining the distinctive richness of Shu Puer. Flavour & Aroma Aged Palace Shu Puer is known for its deep yet gentle character. Expect notes of: Dark earth Cocoa and wood Smooth malt A soft, natural sweetness The liquor is dark and full-bodied, with a velvety texture and very little bitterness.
