Shirley Chisholm was the first Black Woman elected to Congress, first black candidate for a major-party presidential nomination from a major political party, first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, and the founder of the Congressional Black Caucus. And, though former N.Y. State and U.S. Representative Chisholm was born in the States, she spent her formative years in her mother’s beloved homeland and the place where her parents met, Barbados. Walnuts for Chisholm are a second generation Deez Cookies treat. We first honored Congresswoman Chisholm with a cookie version of Caribbean Black Cake, a fruit cake like delight that is colored with burnt sugar and flavored with warm spices, and studded with chopped toasted walnuts and port wine and Barbados rum steeped fruit. In order to add her story to our permanent collection, we've skipped the flour altogether and candied halved walnuts using a luxurious syrup made with reduced ruby port, Mount Gay Rum, organic spices and cane sugar.
