Christmas Avenue

At the height of the December rush, something shifts. The city's buildings rise into a familiar silhouette: their glowing windows the ornaments, the darting pedestrians the garland, the headlights and taillights the scattered stars. New York hasn't stopped moving, but somehow, it has become a Christmas tree. Pierre-Emmanuel Lyet created this cover for The New Yorker's December 15, 2025 issue, using his signature graphic, flat-color illustration style to find the festive in the everyday. In his own words: "During the evening rush, the traffic becomes scattered lights; the people crossing become garlands. It's the strange magic of the season: everyone rushing somewhere, swept up in a festive frenzy that's as exhilarating as it is dizzying." It's a perfect gift for New Yorker fans, holiday puzzle enthusiasts, and anyone who loves New York City most when it's lit up for the season.
