Apsley Gorge Pinot Noir 2025 750ml

Apsley Gorge is a small vineyard on Tasmania's East Coast, a few kilometres inland from Bicheno near the entrance to the Apsley Gorge. Afternoon breezes funnel through the gorge and cool the vines, and it is usually among the last vineyards in Tasmania to be picked. Winemaker Brian Franklin, one of the island's genuine characters, has made the wines here since 1999 and spends time each year working vintage in Burgundy. The 2025 Pinot Noir was harvested in late April and made along Burgundian lines. After a cold soak, the wine fermented on natural yeasts, then spent around 14 months in French oak barrels before being bottled without fining or filtration. Expect a deep, bright ruby colour and a ripe, layered nose of dark cherry and plum, with complexity from the wild ferment and no green or stalky edges. The palate is textured and mouth-filling, with a firm savoury line, soft fine tannins and fresh acidity carrying a long finish.
