About five or six years ago, a friend in Berlin asked me to paint the cover of Frank Ocean’s album Blond. Only much later did I learn that the photograph behind it was taken by the German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans. The image stayed with me. I kept thinking about turning it into something Warhol-like, with a twist: instead of changing the background colours, I would change the hair. Around the same time I kept seeing clips of Ocean with different hair colours, and somewhere along the way the two ideas merged. The result: the same portrait, painted nine times on one canvas, each with its own colour.
