Browse the full Karakul collection. Design The drawing follows the classical rugs of Oushak (also written Ushak or Usak) in western Anatolia. Large, serrated palmettes are set out in offset rows across the field: some drawn in deep navy and green, others outlined in ivory around a saffron heart, and broad camel rosettes with navy or rose centres in between. A pale aqua and coral lobed medallion holds the centre, and a slender lattice of vines in soft camel links the whole composition. Between the large forms the ground is scattered with small blossoms, crosses, diamonds and sprigs in navy, coral, saffron and sage. The main border repeats the language of the field on a light ground — rosettes in olive and navy, star blossoms and stylised cloud bands in saffron — held between narrow guard stripes with a reciprocal pattern. Colour The ground is a warm sand-ivory with a gentle, slightly washed movement in the wool. Against it stand clear accents of navy blue, camel and saffron yellow, with smaller notes of coral, rose, sage green and pale aqua. The result is light and calm overall, yet the navy gives the rug a firm structure that reads well from across the room. It sits easily with oak, walnut, linen and natural stone, and picks up blue, ochre or green in upholstery, curtains or artwork. Material and Quality The pile is 100 % wool, hand-knotted onto a cotton foundation. The knotting is fine enough to carry the small blossoms, vine lines and serrated outlines of the palmettes cleanly. At around 22 kg the rug lies flat and settled on the floor. In the Room At 243 x 300 cm (8 ft 0 in x 9 ft 10 in, 7.3 m² / 78 sq ft) this is a classic room-size format in the 8 x 10 ft range: Dining room: takes a table for six with the chairs still on the rug when pulled out, in rooms from about 3.5 x 4.5 m (11 x 15 ft) upwards. Sitting room: holds a sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table, with the front legs of the seating on the rug. Bedroom: placed under the lower two-thirds of a king or super-king bed, it frames the bed generously on both sides. In London, this is a rug for the dining room of a Victorian terrace in Clapham or a light-filled flat in Hampstead, where the navy palmettes hold their own against dark wood and painted panelling — and it reaches London within 2–7 working days.
