A Joseon Karatsu Chawan by Rui Mitoh. The first thing that catches the eye is the intensely rugged character of the clay and glaze. Iron-rich glaze runs dramatically over the white surface, creating scorched areas, crawling, and speckled textures across the entire bowl. Together with the irregular rim and powerful swelling of the body, the chawan has an unmistakably wild presence. This piece was also fired using a technique known as hiki-otoshi, in which the bowl is dropped directly into the flames of the climbing kiln and exposed to intense heat. As a result, the surface developed complex scorching, crawling, and glaze transformations, leaving a skin that looks as if the force of the fire itself has been imprinted upon it. The contrast of white and iron characteristic of Joseon Karatsu is intensified by the direct traces of the climbing kiln, giving the bowl a powerful, raw, and robust character.
