He enjoys his quiet walks, adores soaking up the sun and most of all, a good snuggle up in bed or on the sofa! Although a friendly dog in the home, out on walks Bentley can be barky towards other dogs and is usually anxious around larger dogs. Bentley can also be possessive around his food, treats, and toys with the other young dog he currently lives with. His new family will need to manage this carefully, and behaviourist support can be provided if needed. Bentley is far more at ease with older smaller dogs and fellow dachshunds, so he would thrive either as the only dog or with a calm, older, small dog after a successful introduction. Like most dachshunds, Bentley can be nervous and bark when visitors enter the home and may need some time before approaching them. However, once introduced calmly and given time to settle, his affectionate self comes through, and he will eagerly welcome belly rubs and cuddles. Bentley is in generally good health. He has previously suffered with IVDD but has subsequently made a good recovery. He can occasionally become a little unsteady if he overexerts himself, in which case he benefits from a few quiet days of rest. His new home will need to be mindful of stairs and jumping on and off furniture to help protect his back. Bentley is happy to settle in his crate when left at home but not for long periods of time, so would suit a home where someone is around for much of the day and can give him the time and attention he needs. Bentley could live with older sensible teenagers who understand and respect his boundaries and currently sleeps in bed with the owner’s older teenage daughter.
