2023 Raúl Pérez Ultreia Godello

Raúl Pérez is one of Spain’s most influential modern winemakers, widely credited with redefining quality and style in regions like Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra and beyond. Based in north-west Spain, he works as both a producer and consultant, but is best known for his own project in Bierzo, where he focuses on old-vine, often small and fragmented parcels. This is a refined, site-driven Godello. Sourced from select hillside vineyards with slate, clay-limestone and sand soils, this cuvée reflects Pérez’s low-intervention philosophy and his focus on expressing vineyard nuance. Plots are vinified separately allowing for maximum expression when blending. Fermentation is typically carried out with indigenous yeasts, followed by ageing on lees in stainless and used French oak of varying size to build texture without losing precision. Elegant and finely textured, with aromas of lemon zest, ripe pear, white peach and delicate floral notes. The palate is layered yet focused, combining citrus and stone fruit with a subtle waxy richness and a mineral backbone. Fresh acidity drives the wine forward, while a gentle savoury, saline edge adds complexity. The finish is long, stony and quietly powerful—more restrained and linear than richer Godello styles, but with excellent depth and clarity.
