Vintage Khozema Boucherouite Rug 5 × 8 ft (230 × 140 cm) | 14977
Djoharian Collection · Morocco · Khozema Boucherouite Vintage Khozema Boucherouite 230 × 140 cm · Recycled Textile Berber A Berber pile rug hand-knotted entirely from recycled textiles — the upcycled origin of the Boucherouite tradition. Khozema — The Upcycled Berber Rug This piece belongs to the Ait Khozema tradition, a branch of the Moroccan Boucherouite (also Boucharouette) family. Berber women in the Atlas regions developed this technique in the second half of the 20th century, when traditional wool supplies became scarce and clothing textiles entered the household economy. The result: rugs hand-knotted entirely from recycled fabrics — old garments, cotton, wool remnants, and mixed-fibre strips, cut and re-tied on a cotton foundation. What began as economic resourcefulness has become one of the most distinctive textile categories of the Maghreb. Each Khozema is genuinely one-of-a-kind: the palette is dictated by whatever textiles arrived in the weaver's hands, and the geometric vocabulary stays in the Azilal-Berber register — diamonds, lozenges, bands, free-hand symbols. A Sustainability Story Built Into the Material This is a rug with an unusual material biography. The pile contains the everyday textiles of an entire community — re-cut, re-tied into a new object. Long before "upcycling" was a category in European design, Berber women had built a complete textile tradition around it. For interior-design clients who care about provenance and material story, Khozema rugs sit in a category of their own. Vintage Character We date this piece to approximately the 1990s–2000s, the classical vintage window of Moroccan Khozema production. The condition is very good, with the slightly variable hand and surface character that comes with mixed-textile construction. Presence in the Room At 230 × 140 cm (4.6 × 7.5 ft), 3.2 m² this is a versatile medium-format piece. The bold geometric palette and varied surface texture make it work in three particular settings: Boho-modern living room: as graphic anchor for a relaxed seating group, the textile complexity adds character without dictating the palette. Loft or eclectic interior: the recycled-fabric surface reads as deliberate composition in spaces where material story carries weight. Bedroom or layered styling: at the foot of the bed or over a larger neutral foundation, the Khozema reads as a confident, conversation-starting accent.
