Early Antique Agra carpet
From the 16th to 19th Century many fine carpets were woven in Agra and Amritsar, from the finest sheeps wool and silk, with Persian patterns often known as Indo Agra’s. This remarkable early antique Agra Carpet dates from the early 19th century, using classical 17th Century patterns from Isfahan a Persian city that produced exceptional fine and highly detailed carpets. Using large scale floral palmettes and cloud-band designs to beautiful effect. The drawing of this carpet is quite wonderful with stunning symmetry and well proportioned design. The wide border with scrolling vines connecting the floral palmettes is exquisite. Woven in the early to mid part of the 19th century the condition is good in general, with predominantly a good wool pile in place. Minimal scattered wear can be seen and minor old areas of restoration, this carpet has not been heavily restored or re-piled which keeps its originality and beauty. The structure is sound and in excellent order. The deep blue dyes varying gold border tones and rich reds and faded sage greens complete the look to create a truly handsome carpet. The best weavers in India often travelled from Persia to showcase their skill and replicate these 17th century designs.
