He enlisted on the 10th June 1896serving on HMS Fearless during the boer war, during WW1 he was on HMS Thunderer from 15th June 1912 to 27th November 1916, then with Plymouth Div to 30th June 1917, HMS Cyclops to 13th March 1919. He continued to serve until being discharged on the 5th February 1928.
