IRWIN: Photographic Work accompanies the first comprehensive retrospective exhibition of the photographic oeuvre of the IRWIN art collective. For the first time, the catalogue comprehensively highlights photography as an important yet often overlooked aspect of the creative practice of one of Slovenia’s most significant art groups. The publication brings together more than four decades of photographic work created either as documentation of artistic interventions, performances and temporary installations or as independent conceptual works. Through the medium of photography, the catalogue highlights key projects by the IRWIN group, including Svoji k svojim, Was ist Kunst and NSK Garda. IRWIN does not use photography merely as a document, but as a space for the reinterpretation of images, symbols and political meanings. In their work, photography becomes a means of transformation, appropriation and critical reflection on history, ideology and visual representation. The catalogue includes reproductions of works, archival material and texts that shed light on the significance of photography within the collective’s artistic practice. Special attention is also given to collaborations with local and international photographers, including Andres Serrano, Bojan Salaj, Miha Fras, Leslie Fratkin and others. The publication offers an important insight into the work of IRWIN, a group that has been exploring the relationships between art, ideology, history and the power of images for more than four decades.
