History Pictures for a Living Education: The Vikings
History Pictures for a Living Education: The Vikings is designed to enliven and enhance the quest for historical knowledge in the home schoolroom, featuring fifty photographs and illustrations of arms, relics, artefacts, historic sites, architecture, artistic representations of historic events, plans and maps, and portraits of eminent persons. Designed to bring history to life for students and young people studying the events of the past, the History Pictures for a Living Education books are largely based on Black’s History Pictures, a series published by A. & C. Black in the early twentieth century. An edition of Black’s History Pictures was recommended as a suitable resource for young students of history by Charlotte Mason. Although especially arranged to accompany the reading of living history texts, this book can be used by students of all ages, forms, and educational philosophies studying British History, and makes an excellent companion to history readers such as Our Island Story, by H. E. Marshall, or A History of England, by H. O. Arnold-Forster. Printed on high quality glossy paper, the book is spiral bound for ease of use, all pictures are clearly labelled, and most include captions to provide context and continuity throughout. Our Island Story, mentioned above, is used in the Living Heritage homeschool curriculum.
