Natural Rough Larimar Specimen About This Piece: This natural rough Larimar specimen weighs 114 grams and measures roughly 6cm at its widest point. It is displayed on a wooden stand and shows vibrant sea-blue crystalline formations contrasting beautifully with the dark host rock matrix. What is Larimar? Larimar is a rare blue variety of the mineral pectolite (NaCa₂Si₃O₈(OH)). The striking blue colour comes from trace amounts of copper within the crystal structure. Only Larimar from the Dominican Republic displays these vivid blue tones. Formation and Origin Larimar formed millions of years ago when volcanic fluids filled cavities in ancient lava flows in the Sierra de Bahoruco mountains, Barahona Province, southwestern Dominican Republic. It is mined from only one small area on Earth, making it one of the rarest gem materials in the world.
