Longans are the quiet cousin of the lychee, smaller, less flashy and utterly addictive once you try them fresh from the farm. Known as long nhan or dragon eye in Vietnamese, they carry a translucent juicy flesh with a floral, musky sweetness that bears little resemblance to the tinned version most Australians know. These are grown at Conscious Ground in the Byron Bay hinterland, a certified organic agroforest farm that grows traditional Southeast Asian fruits and plants with deep respect for their cultural and medicinal origins. Fresh longans are seasonal and genuinely rare in certified organic form. How to use: Eat fresh. Simply peel the skin, pop out the flesh and eat around the seed. Add to fruit salads with mango, papaya and a squeeze of lime. Blend into smoothies with coconut milk and ginger. Simmer in a light sugar syrup and serve chilled over ice as a dessert soup, a classic Vietnamese preparation. Freeze and use as ice cubes in summer drinks. Traditional notes: In traditional Chinese and Vietnamese medicine, longan is prized for its calming and nourishing properties, often used to support sleep, settle anxiety and strengthen the blood. It has been grown and eaten medicinally across Asia for over a thousand years. We share this in the spirit of honouring the plant's history. How to store: Refrigerate and consume within 5 to 7 days. Longans do not improve with time, eat them as fresh as possible. You can freeze shelled longan flesh for smoothies and cooking. Grown by May and Richard at Conscious Ground, Myocum NSW. SXC Certified Organic No. 25227. Follow their story at consciousground.com and @consciousground on Instagram.
