The Cartier Tank has achieved iconic status in the world of watch design and, with the exception of a few distinctive variations, has maintained a consistent aesthetic throughout its extensive production history. The first commercially available Tank Normale was introduced in 1919, having been inspired by the treads of the French Renault FT-17 tank used in WW1. Throughout the decades, Tank watches have been documented on the wrists of notable figures from Jackie Kennedy to Andy Warhol. Today, Cartier feels more relevant in the worlds of fashion, music and popular culture than ever before. During the '60s and '70s, as Cartier's Paris, London, and New York maisons began operating with greater independence, the brand partnered with a select group of watchmakers and jewelers to develop and introduce a number of distinctive new wristwatch designs. This piece on offer is a seldom seen "stepped" Tank, circa '75 that was New York retailed. Many examples we've found are plated but this example is cased in 18k yellow gold and houses a white "stretched Roman" dial to occupy its large 24mm by 34mm case. It also shows an interesting hand engraving stating "I love you, Big E The Dragon Lady, signed Christmas of '75. This piece retains its correct NY Cartier "double C" signed pin buckle and makes for an excellent choice for anyone looking for more wrist presence and some history in a vintage Cartier.
