A stoloniferous, deciduous shrub of woodlands that forms low, spreading mats along the ground. Stems root as they travel, creating a dense, layered groundcover over time. Leaves are small and rounded to slightly lobed, reminiscent of small oak leaves, while stems can take on coppery tones. In late spring to early summer, clusters of small, pink, urn-shaped flowers appear along the stems, attracting native bumblebees. These are followed by white berries that persist into fall.
