Goldbacks represent a privately issued, voluntary form of local currency crafted from a thin sheet of 24-karat gold laminated within durable polyester layers. Each note includes intricate artwork and holds a precise fractional quantity of physical gold, placing Goldbacks among the rare examples of spendable gold currency in modern circulation. The concept began in Utah and has since grown to include several other states, merging the long-standing value of gold with the convenience of a transactional medium. The newest addition, the Idaho Goldback, introduces another denomination, with each note featuring designs influenced by the culture and imagery of its respective state. Today, 1/2 Idaho Goldback Gold Notes are available from our site. Note Highlights: Comes with individual currency sleeves or bundles of 100 notes! Unique design for the Idaho series! Allegorical figure inspired by Pietas on the reverse! Contains 1/2000 troy oz of .9999 pure gold. Design honors Sacagawea and her links to Idaho. Please keep in mind that Goldbacks are NOT US legal tender. UV enhancements and other advanced security features included. Pietas was one of the most deeply venerated virtues in Roman culture, personified as a serene female figure representing devoted duty to the gods, one’s family, and the state. She is often depicted in classical art carrying a stork — a symbol of filial care — or a patera, a shallow dish used in ritual offerings, and sometimes accompanied by a swallow or a small altar. The concept of pietas extended far beyond simple piety; it encompassed a profound moral obligation to honor all sacred bonds, whether between parent and child, citizen and homeland, or mortal and divine. All 1/2 Idaho Goldback Gold Notes feature 24-karat gold content with UV-enhanced artwork, individual serial numbers, and micro-printing for enhanced security. Individual notes arrive in protective currency sleeves, while multiples of 100 are packaged together with a black bundle tie. Please note that bundles do not include currency sleeves for each note. For the design of the 1/2 Idaho Goldback Gold Note, Pietas is embodied in a design honoring Sacagawea. Sacagawea, the Lemhi Shoshone woman who served as an interpreter and guide for the Lewis and Clark Expedition, shares a profound and personal connection to the land that would become Idaho. Born around 1788 near the present-day town of Salmon in the Lemhi Valley, she was kidnapped as a young girl by Hidatsa raiders and eventually came to live among the Mandan people in present-day North Dakota. When the Corps of Discovery passed through Idaho in 1805, Sacagawea’s knowledge of the terrain, her ability to communicate with the Shoshone, and her calm presence proved indispensable to the expedition’s success.
