WAYST Pendant 01

The brick that built the wall, now lights the room. Pendant 01 marks the beginning of WAYST — the first object developed through the studio's full material and making process. Conceived as an exploration of demolition waste, it tests how discarded brick can be reconstituted into a working lighting object while keeping the traces of where it came from visible. The form takes its proportions from a traditional rectangular brick — reduced to its most basic geometry — with a dome added to let the light diffuse from within. The result sits between two things: the sharp edge of the brick, and the soft curve that lets it glow. Making Cast from brick rubble and cement — demolition waste reclaimed from sites across KwaZulu-Natal, sorted, crushed, and bound. The form was developed digitally, 3D-printed as a master pattern, and used to produce the silicone mould each piece is cast from. Once cured, the surface is acid-etched, exposing the aggregate beneath so the fragments of brick within stay legible.
