Low-RPM Wind Turbine Permanent Magnet Generator 12V 24V 48V
Rated by the Maker at 500 RPM. Match your Rotor to it. Build your own vertical wind turbine and the generator is the part you can't knock up in the shed. Blades, a frame and a pole you can fabricate. A generator that still makes useful charge at the slow speed a vertical rotor actually turns is the bit you have to buy. This is a three-phase permanent magnet generator, sold as the generator only. The maker rates it at 500 W, 1000 W, 2000 W or 3000 W, all at 500 RPM, and each size comes wound for a 12V, 24V or 48V battery bank. Pick the winding that matches the bank you already have, because it is set at the factory and can't be changed later. Be clear on what it is not. There are no blades, no tail, no pole and no controller in the box. The output is unregulated three-phase AC that rises and falls with rotor speed, so it has to go through a wind or hybrid charge controller before it reaches a battery. The wattage is the maker's rating at 500 RPM, not a figure we have tested — a slow rotor in light wind spends most of its life well below that, so treat it as a ceiling, not an average. Delivery is free. It ships from the supplier overseas, and their own estimate is about 17 to 28 days from the day you order to Australia, and about 15 to 29 days to New Zealand. That is slower than most of our range, and we'd rather you knew before you order. What it Solves Home-Built Vertical Turbine: you've built a rotor that turns slowly and need a direct-drive head that charges without a gearbox in the way. Repowering a Small Turbine: the frame and blades are fine but the original head is finished, and you want to stay on the same battery voltage. Shack, Hut or Mooring: somewhere you only visit some weekends, where the bank needs topping up while nobody's there. Shed & Workshop Bank: a shed a long way from the meter box, charging a small battery bank off your own build. Test Rig or Training Bench: a workshop, school or hobby project that needs a real three-phase generator to put on a bench. Key Features Permanent Magnet Field: rare-earth NdFeB magnets, as stated by the supplier, so there is no field winding to energise and no brushes to wear. Gearless Direct Drive: the rotor drives the generator directly, with no step-up gearbox to oil or replace. Rated at 500 RPM: the maker's rated speed. The wattage on each size is the maker's figure at that speed. Four Sizes: the maker rates them at 500 W, 1000 W, 2000 W and 3000 W. Three Battery Voltages: 12V, 24V and 48V windings, chosen at order. The winding is fixed — you can't reconfigure it on site. Three-Phase Output: unregulated AC out to a wind or hybrid charge controller, which turns it into DC your bank can take. Aluminium Alloy Case: an aluminium alloy case on an iron shaft, as stated by the supplier. Outer-Rotor Layout: the maker describes it as an outer-rotor design, with a bolt-hole flange on the face of the case. Where This Fits This is one part of the gear that sits between a wind turbine and your battery bank. Here's the whole picture: Hybrid MPPT Controllers: you can't wire a generator straight to a battery. The controller rectifies the output, manages the charge, and brakes the turbine when the bank is full. Bigger Generator Heads: the permanent magnet dynamo goes from 2000W to 7000W (the maker's ratings, at 750 RPM). Complete Wind Turbines: if you'd rather not build your own, these are complete turbines, blades and all. The Rest of the Electrical Range: bus bars, breakers, isolators, cable, lugs and Anderson plugs. Fit a DC breaker or fuse between the controller and the battery, close to the battery, so you can isolate the system before you touch anything. Don't put a plain breaker or isolator on the turbine wires: cutting that line while the blades turn lets the turbine overspeed. You don't need an extra switch there either — the controller brakes the turbine itself. Your electrician will confirm what the wiring rules need for your site. That protects you, and it protects your new turbine and the rest of your power system. Cable sizing depends on your run length, voltage and current — if you're building 12V or 24V, check the sizing against your own run or ask your sparky. Q & A Can I Wire This Straight to my Battery Bank? No. It puts out unregulated three-phase AC that varies with rotor speed, so it needs a wind or hybrid charge controller in between. Have a look at the hybrid MPPT controllers — the controller also brakes the turbine once the bank is full, which the generator can't do on its own. Which Voltage Should I Order — 12V, 24V or 48V? Match the bank you're charging. The winding is set at the factory, so this isn't a switch you flick later. On the 2000 W and 3000 W sizes, 48V is the easier system to wire — the current is lower, so the cable and breakers are smaller. Will it Actually Make its Rated Wattage? The wattage is the maker's rating at 500 RPM, and we haven't tested it. Below that speed the output falls away, and a vertical rotor in light wind spends a lot of its life well below rated speed. Size your bank on what you realistically expect over a day, not on the number in the option. How do I Attach my Rotor? The supplier doesn't publish the shaft diameter, keyway or flange bolt pattern, and we're not going to guess a figure you'd machine to. The photos show a shaft out of the centre and a bolt-hole flange on the face of the case, and the maker calls it an outer-rotor design. Measure it when it arrives before you cut any metal. Does it Come with a Mounting Base? We can't promise one. The supplier's spec list mentions a mounting base, but their picture for this option shows the generator without one. Plan your own mount. What Colour is it? The supplier's photos show the same generator in silver and in white, and their picture for this option is silver. The colour that ships is not specified. Is it Weatherproof Enough to Sit on a Pole? No water rating is published, so don't assume it will shrug off weather. Plan on a housing that keeps direct rain off it and lets it drain and breathe, the same as you would for any generator head. How Long will Delivery Take? Delivery is free. It comes from the supplier overseas, and their own estimate is about 17 to 28 days from the day you order to Australia, and about 15 to 29 days to New Zealand. Outside Australia, any import duty or tax charged on arrival is yours.
