The backrest holds your lumbar curve, so your back muscles are not doing the work your chair should be doing. It fits you, not the other way round. Two seat widths, and a 3-position rear axle that moves the wheels to match how you push. Set it forward and the chair turns on a dime for an experienced user. Set it back and it is stable and forgiving, which is where most people start. Someone can stop the chair without bending down. Attendant Brakes are built into both push handles as standard. Whoever is walking behind you can apply the parking brake from where they are standing, on a slope or a ramp, without crouching at the wheel. It goes in the car. Wheels off with a push button, footrests off by hand, and the frame comes down to 16.1 lb. That is a two-handed lift, not a heave. The backrest A flat back panel pushes your lower spine backwards into a C. Your pelvis tilts, your head comes forward to compensate, and your diaphragm loses room to work. That is why sitting still gets tiring. The Comfort backrest is shaped, not flat, and the shape is part of the frame rather than a cushion strapped on afterwards. It fills the hollow of your lower back and lets your shoulders sit where they belong. The Strongback Comfort won a German Design Award in 2018 and a Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum in 2023. How the adjustment works. The backrest panel is held by wide hook-and-loop straps. You set the tension at any height along the back and to any firmness, so the support meets your own lumbar curve rather than an average one. The adjustment works across a range of −10 to +20 degrees. That is what "infinitely adjustable" means here: the curve is built into the frame, and you decide how firmly, and where, it meets you. Rated for users up to 300 lb The aluminum frame is rated for users up to 300 lb / 136 kg, tested to ISO 7176-15 for static, impact and fatigue loading. Static stability is at least 7 degrees in every axle position, the reference test being ISO 7176-1. The frame carries a 5-year warranty. Made for transfers and tight spaces The footrests swing away and come off by hand, so nothing sits between you and a bed, sofa or car seat during a transfer. The desk-length armrests are shortened at the front, which lets the chair pull right up to a table or kitchen counter instead of stopping at the edge. Integral clothing guards keep fabric clear of the wheels. Frequently asked questions How much does the Strongback Comfort weigh? The Strongback Comfort has two published weights, and we label both. The Comfort M (18 in seat) has a Weight of 16.1 lb, the bare frame without footrests, wheels and anti-tippers, and that is what goes into the trunk. The L (20 in seat) is 16.5 lb. Complete and ready to roll, the Total Weight is 25.8 lb for the M and 26.2 lb for the L. The quick-release wheels come off without tools, so you never lift the whole chair at once. What makes the Strongback Comfort different from other lightweight wheelchairs? The Strongback Comfort differs in the back. Most lightweight folding wheelchairs give you a flat sling back, which lets the pelvis tilt backward and the spine round over a long day of sitting. The Comfort carries the patented Strongback backrest, contoured to your lumbar curve, built into the frame rather than strapped on, and adjustable to your own back by hook-and-loop strap tension. At 16.1 lb it does this without a weight penalty, and the 3-position rear axle is included rather than sold as an extra. Is the Strongback Comfort a wheelchair or a transport chair? The Strongback Comfort is a wheelchair. Its 24 in rear wheels carry ergonomic hand rims sized for you to propel yourself, and an attendant can push as well. A transport chair has small rear wheels, no hand rims, and only moves when someone pushes it. If you will always be pushed, look at the Strongback Excursion instead. How many sizes does the Strongback Comfort come in? The Strongback Comfort family comes in three sizes, and this page covers two of them: the M with an 18 in seat and the L with a 20 in seat. Both use 24 in rear wheels and both have Attendant Brakes as standard. The third size is the Strongback Comfort S at 16 in with 22 in wheels, and it has its own page because the frame is genuinely different rather than just narrower. Which Strongback Comfort seat width should I choose, 18 or 20 inches? The Strongback Comfort M has an 18 in seat and the Comfort L has a 20 in seat. Measure the widest point across your hips and thighs while seated: 15 to 17 in takes the M, 17 to 19 in takes the L, and under 15 in points to the Comfort S. Get this right, because a seat that is too wide costs you your arm position and lets your trunk lean, which is exactly what the backrest is there to prevent. If you land on a boundary, go up. The rear axle mounts in three positions and where it sits changes how the chair behaves. Back is the stable setting: more weight rests on the front castors, the chair is harder to tip, and it takes more effort per push. That is where most people start. Forward shifts weight off the castors, so the chair turns more quickly and each push carries further, which is where experienced users settle, at the cost of some rearward stability. The middle position suits most everyday use. It can be changed at any time, so the chair moves with you as your technique develops. Is the backrest on the Strongback Comfort adjustable? The Strongback Comfort backrest adjusts by hook-and-loop strap tension. The panel is held by wide straps, so you set the tension at any height along the back and to any firmness, across a range of −10 to +20 degrees. The lumbar contour itself is built into the frame and is not a cushion, so what you are setting is how firmly, and where, that contour meets your own back. That matters more than it sounds: the depth of the lumbar curve varies a lot between people, and a backrest fixed to an average supports the wrong part of most backs. What is the difference between the Strongback Comfort and the Strongback Heavy Duty? Both chairs carry the same patented Strongback backrest, and the difference is capacity and size. The Strongback Comfort is the ultra-lightweight daily chair, rated to 300 lb, in an 18 or 20 in seat. The Strongback Heavy Duty is rated to 375 lb with a 22 in seat and drum brakes as standard. Choose the Comfort for the lightest self-propelled chair with full posture support. Choose the Heavy Duty when you need the higher capacity or the wider seat. Choose a capacity that sits above your weight with margin rather than at it. If you need more, the Strongback Heavy Duty is rated to 375 lb / 170 kg with a 22 in seat. Does the Strongback Comfort fit in a car? The Strongback Comfort folds with everything still attached to 29.5 x 17 x 30 in for the M and 29 x 14 x 32 in for the L. Taking the quick-release wheels and the footrests off cuts another 2 to 4 in from the width and brings the lift down to 16.1 lb.
