2024 Rainer Beilharz Cello.

This is the second cello I’ve photographed by renowned Australian luthier Rainer Beilharz. Sought after by soloists both in Australia and internationally, Rainer’s instruments embody an exciting blend of tradition and innovation. Modelled on a Guarneri cello, this instrument features fabric panels along the bouts, an ancient technique favoured by the great Cremonese makers. The panels allow the cello’s sides to remain thinner and more resonant while retaining exceptional strength. The rear plate, which forms the “floor” in this photograph, is particularly special. Cut “on the slab” from a single piece of wood, it reveals a marvellous, broad river of grain. This contrasts with the tight lines of the top plate, which was cut in the conventional manner. Such a feature is especially rare in a cello because the tree must be extraordinarily wide to yield a single plate cut in this way. Limited-Edition Prints from an edition of 250. Signed and numbered by the Artist, with a Certificate of Authenticity.
