Large 19th Century Italian Giltwood Mirror

Large and wonderfully carved 19th Century Italian giltwood mirror. This magnificent mirror retains its original gilding which has aged beautifully and acquired a fine patination. Impressive large size and must have been made for a very important house. The theme of the decoration is floral, an anthemion cresting resting above scrolls of foliage which is attached to a rectangular frame which is carved with repeating leafy motifs. The bottom left and right corners of the mirror are ornamented with carved stylised cartouche-like flower head motifs, a version of which also sits beneath the anthemion cresting at the top of the piece. All of the carving is executed in high relief with great delicacy, indicating a workshop of some importance. --- Height: 177.5cm Width: 225cm Depth: 4cm
