In Worka Chelbesa, the largest coffee growing area in Gedeb, SNAP operates two washing stations– Chelbesa and Danche, names certainly familiar to folks who have been drinking Friedhats for a while. Combined they process the coffee of around one thousand smallholders, ensuring no one needs to travel further than 40 minutes with their cherry. Danche primarily services the higher altitude growers, whose plots are at such great altitude that harvest is late relative to other growers in the region. The longer maturation period is apparent in the quality and complexity of the coffee, making it my exact opposite (me being immature, low quality, and lacking any sort of depth according to the last few dates I went on). Well there I go, making everything about me again, I guess they were right and I have some serious reflecting to do. But don’t let my epiphany here take away from the ultimate point of this little write-up: Danche is an absolute banger of an Ethiopia nat, and there’s a reason we keep working with SNAP at their various washing stations. They do excellent work in processing and agronomy, and go through the rigmarole of organic certification on principle. We’re thrilled to have this coffee, and I just know that you will be too.
