The Tanto Solid Wood Pedestal Conference Table

Named for the Japanese blade whose angled tip it echoes, the Tanto carries a knife-edge bevel around its entire perimeter. The result is a solid wood conference table whose full-thickness slab reads as a thin, floating plane, all the presence of massive lumber with none of the visual weight. Run your hand along that edge and you understand immediately why this piece got a blade's name. The top rides on twin pedestals, each a pair of solid wood panels folded into a Y. The angled planes echo the bevel above them, and because the support sits well inside the perimeter, every seat gets full legroom. Chairs slide in and out without bumping into anything. No metal, no ornament, just lumber, geometry, and shadow. The surface itself is a single generous plane of solid oak, walnut or urban lumber, wide enough and long enough to seat a full team with room for laptops, documents and the accumulated materials of actual work. The top can be cut into two pieces to fit through elevators and doorways during delivery, which is helpful for most office buildings. In this case, we would add a third leg for support. Much of the timber comes from trees that fell naturally around Los Angeles. We milled the lumber in our workshop and selected boards for continuous grain that flows across the top and down through the folded pedestals. The finish is hard-wax oil that protects against coffee rings and elbows while letting the wood breathe and age gracefully over years of quarterly reviews and client pitches. A minimalist conference table for rooms where restraint is the statement. The Tanto communicates through a single perfect edge, which is usually all it takes.
