Rama in Tholu Bommalata by Sindhe Siva
This majestic Tholu Bommalata artwork by Sindhe Siva depicts Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu and the central hero of the Ramayana, rendered through the traditional shadow puppetry of Andhra Pradesh in a form that embodies divine authority and righteousness. As the central figure around whom the epic and much of Tholu Bommalata's traditional repertoire revolves, Rama occupies a place of paramount significance within the artform's body of work. Tholu Bommalata, the "dance of leather puppets" is a shadow theatre tradition of the Telugu-speaking Deccan with a history reaching back some two thousand years. Its performances are historically drawn from a Telugu version of the Ramayana compiled for the shadow stage, alongside episodes from the Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana. Puppets are cut from goat, deer or buffalo hide, cleaned and treated over roughly two weeks until translucent, then hand-painted with natural dyes and finely perforated so that, held before a lit screen, each figure glows as a vivid, coloured shadow. Lord Rama is depicted here with his iconic blue-toned complexion, his posture poised and vigilant. He wears a vibrant orange kurta decorated with delicate white dotted patterns, paired with a yellow shawl draped over his right shoulder and trimmed with red and white patterned borders. He is draped in a yellow dhoti adorned with dark borders, leading down to black pointed shoes accented with white star-like dots and bright red lining. His head is adorned with an elaborate multi-tiered kirita crown in shades of red, gold and white, accompanied by circular ear ornaments, intricate necklaces and armbands that glint with delicate gold-toned perforations. In his right hand, Rama holds a sharp, arrow directed downward, while his left hand firmly grasps his bow, the Kodanda, slung across his body, with a quiver of arrows visible behind his left shoulder. His calm, clear-eyed expression conveys a noble and godly bearing befitting the ideal king. As the still centre around which so many of Tholu Bommalata's other figures, allies, demons, and fellow avatars, are ultimately organised, this artwork captures Rama with the composure and quiet radiance his role demands. Sindhe Siva's rendering brings together the full expressive range of the tradition, its vivid natural dyes, intricate perforation work and refined iconographic precision, in service of the epic's central and most enduring figure.
