Signature: Made by Minamoto Hidenaga in Hiji, Bungo Province, on an Auspicious Day in the Second Month of Genji 2 (1865)” Province: Bungo Province (present O-ita Prefecture) Period: Late Edo Period, Genji 2 (1865) Certification: NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon (Especially Worthy of Preservation) Construction: Shinogi-zukuri, Ubu Nakago Hamon: Choji-midare (Clove Blossom Temper Pattern) A Rare and Elegant Blade from the Last Samurai Era Hidenaga was a highly accomplished swordsmith of Bungo Province during the closing years of the Edo period. In pursuit of mastery, he traveled extensively throughout Japan, studying the techniques of some of the most respected traditions of the age, including the schools of Hizen Tadayoshi, Higo Enju, Satsuma Masayoshi, and Bushū Nobuhide. Through this broad education, he developed exceptional technical skill and eventually became the official swordsmith retained by Kinoshita Hida-no-Kami, lord of the Hiji Domain in Bungo. This katana is a remarkable example of Hidenaga’s artistry and versatility. The hamon displays an impressive progression of styles rarely encountered within a single blade. Beginning at the base, it opens in a magnificent ō-gunome midare interwoven with richly layered jūka-chōji (double clove formations), creating a brilliant and highly decorative appearance. Toward the middle section, the temper line becomes a refined ko-midare in suguha style, demonstrating restraint and balance. In the upper half of the blade, the hamon transforms once again into vigorous gunome-chōji, animated by intense sunagashi and striking kinsuji, producing a dramatic display of activity within the hardened edge. The seamless integration of these three distinct tempering styles showcases Hidenaga’s extraordinary control and artistic vision. The blade remains exceptionally healthy, well-preserved, and visually captivating, offering collectors a rare opportunity to acquire a late-Edo masterpiece that combines technical sophistication with remarkable aesthetic appeal. Koshirae Ornate Mountings The sword is mounted in an elegant Toppei style Koshirae, a style that became fashionable during the final decades of the Edo period and the turbulent years leading to the Meiji Restoration. Characterized by its practical and martial appearance, this mounting reflects the tastes of the late samurai class when swords were increasingly carried with an emphasis on readiness and functionality. The black lacquered saya is understated yet refined, accented by subtle silver fittings near the kojiri and koiguchi. The iron tsuba possesses a robust, utilitarian elegance, while the black tsuka is mounted with decorative samurai crests menuki that provide a tasteful contrast against the dark silk wrapping. Together, the koshirae and blade form a harmonious ensemble that perfectly embodies the spirit and aesthetics of the Bakumatsu period. Collector’s Note Late Edo swords displaying such a wide range of hamon activity are highly desirable among collectors. Combined with Hidenaga’s reputation as a swordsmith who absorbed techniques from multiple prestigious traditions, this NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon-certified katana represents an exceptional example of Bakumatsu craftsmanship and offers both historical significance and strong visual appeal. The blade comes with a Certificate of NBTHK Japan Sword Preservation Society - Tokubetsu Hozon Paper (Extremely Well-preserved sword) BLADE: Authority/Registration# Fukuoka-054868 *This number means that the blade is verified and registered as an authentic Japanese sword by the board of education and public safety commission.
