1718 – J. C. Weigel – Hispania
Title: “Hispania Vetus Numis Illustrata” Description: Fine map of ancient Roman Hispania (the Iberian Peninsula under Roman rule), Spain and Portugal. The map shows the peninsula divided into its Roman-era regions and tribal territories — Callaeci, Asturia, Cantabri, Vaccaei, Celtiberia, Lusitania, Baetica, Carpetani, Oretani, Contestani, and others — densely populated with the names of ancient towns, rivers, and mountain ranges, with the Balearic Islands (Maior, Minor, Pityusae, Ophiusa) shown offshore. What sets this map apart is its lower border, decorated with an extraordinary series of hand-colored engraved roundels depicting ancient Roman and Iberian coins — a hallmark of Weigel’s numismatic map series — alongside a mock stone tablet bearing the title. Comes from Weigel’s atlas “Descriptio orbis antiqui in XLIV. Tabulis exhibita a Jo. Davide Koelero Hist. et polit. P.P. altdorfino studio atque opera Christophori Weigelii Norimbergae…“ published by Johann David Köhler, in Nuremberg 1718.
