Black And White Hand Woven Rainforest Basket

This handwoven basket comes from the rainforests of eastern Panama. It is made from chunga palm fiber, stripped by hand into fine threads and dyed with plant dyes, then coiled stitch by stitch from the base up to the rim. Every basket is one of a kind, so the piece in these photos is the exact piece that ships to you. Baskets like this one are woven by the Wounaan and Emberá people of Panama's Darién rainforest. The weaving is done almost entirely by the women of the community, who learn it as girls and refine it over a lifetime. A single basket takes weeks of daily work, and the tighter the weave, the more skilled the hand behind it. Nothing about it is machine made or repeated. We have bought directly from the same weaving families since 1991. No middlemen, no importers, no wholesale buyers standing between the artisans and us.
