Style Variation 3 (High Top) (2020) is a limited-edition print by Derrick Adams from a series published by Tandem Press in Madison, Wisconsin, that depicts mannequin-like heads sporting expressive hairstyles. It is one of four prints depicting Black men produced in 2020; in 2023, Adams returned to the series, creating five new images of women with distinctive hairdos. The series relates to Adams’s paintings of display windows at beauty supply stores inspired by cosmetic shops and wig stores in the artist’s Brooklyn neighborhood, which he began making in 2019. Composed with geometric planes and ranges of skin tones, the prints explore portraiture, style, and self-expression.
