Standing 48 metres tall on a remote island off Scotland’s west coast, Skerryvore Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Scotland. Its name comes from the Gaelic An Sgeir Mhòr, meaning “The Great Skerry” — an apt name for this remote, wave-battered outpost.Designed by celebrated Scottish engineer Alan Stevenson, the lighthouse was completed in 1844 and its light shone without a break for 110 years, until a fire in 1954 brought operations to a halt for five years.
