November Throwing Large and Composite Forms with Jesse Gritzinger

Ready to take your wheel work to a larger scale? In this month-long continuing wheel class, students will learn techniques for creating larger, more ambitious thrown forms, from centering and controlling larger amounts of clay to throwing in sections and joining multiple pieces into composite forms. Demonstrations will cover planning proportions, creating strong joins, managing moisture, and timing each stage of construction, giving students practical strategies for building height, volume, and complexity beyond what they can comfortably throw in one piece. This month-long course meets once a week for four two-hour sessions. Students will also have access to open studio hours seven days a week for additional practice. We strongly advise you make sure you’ll be able to attend all class sessions before signing up. While makeup classes are not offered for this course. This is a continuing-level course and students should already be comfortable independently centering and throwing 2-3 lbs of clay. Course fee includes: Firing for up to 12 pieces measuring no more than 12" in any direction, access to studio glazes, and free Studio Blend reclaim clay. Students who would like to work larger than 12" may do so, with additional firing charged at $0.04 per cubic inch. Students are encouraged to use the course to experiment with scale and develop more complex forms rather than focusing on production.
