A vibrant and fiery coleus, Coleus ‘Firelight’ is prized for its glowing foliage in rich shades of crimson, scarlet, burgundy and bronze, often edged with contrasting green. Its bold colouring and vigorous growth make it a fantastic statement plant for bright indoor spaces or sheltered summer containers, providing season-long interest without relying on flowers. Scientific Name Coleus ‘Firelight’ Common Name(s) Coleus, Painted Nettle Origin A cultivated hybrid developed from tropical Coleus species native to Southeast Asia. Light Prefers bright, indirect light. A little gentle morning or late afternoon sun helps maintain the richest foliage colour, while strong midday sun can scorch the leaves. Water Keep the compost evenly moist, allowing the top 2–3cm to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the plant dry out completely, as this can cause wilting and leaf drop. Humidity Enjoys average to high humidity but grows well in most homes. Higher humidity will encourage larger, lusher foliage. Temperature Thrives between 18–27°C. Protect from temperatures below 10°C and keep away from cold draughts. Soil Use a fertile, free-draining peat-free houseplant compost. Mixing in a little perlite will improve drainage while helping retain consistent moisture. Feed Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding during autumn and winter as growth slows. Growth A vigorous, bushy plant that typically reaches 30–60cm tall and wide indoors. Regular pinching encourages a fuller, more compact habit. Flowers Produces small spikes of pale blue to lavender flowers. These are usually removed to encourage the plant to direct its energy into producing colourful foliage. Toxicity Toxic to cats, dogs and horses if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets. Top Tips Pinch out the growing tips regularly to encourage dense, bushy growth. Remove flower spikes as they appear to maintain the best foliage display. Rotate the pot every few weeks for even growth. Propagates easily from stem cuttings placed in water or compost. Can be grown outdoors during the summer in a sheltered spot after all risk of frost has passed, but bring it indoors before temperatures begin to cool.
