Hoya yvesrocheri [#1983]

The plant pictured here is the exact plant being sold Hoya yvesrocheri was first collected on June 11, 1964, in Papua New Guinea by A.N. Millar. The original collection was made in Wagau, Morobe Province, at an elevation of approximately 4,200 ft (1,280 m), where it was found growing high in a large tree within an old garden near a village. Years later, botanist Nathalie Simonsson observed this species growing on a fallen tree along a narrow ridge in the primary rainforest near Bula, Morobe Province. Unfortunately, when the site was revisited in 2013, the ridge had been cleared and burned for slash-and-burn subsistence agriculture. As a result, Hoya yvesrocheri is believed to be highly threatened in its native habitat. The species was named in honor of the Yves Rocher Foundation, which sponsored much of Nathalie Simonsson's botanical research in Papua New Guinea between 2011 and 2015.
