Forestry Woodchips
Forestry Woodchips is produced from chipping non-merchantable timber upon firesmarting activities. It is mainly made of trunkwood, with branches and some bark. Shape is generally more compact than shreds. Firesmarting activities involve removal of 'forest fuel' by replacing flammable coniferous trees with fire-resistant deciduous species e.g. aspen. Forestry Woodchips thus mainly contains spruce and pine. Processed Forestry Woodchips is sifted to reduce dust content, and seasoned to ≤ 14% humidity content. Raw Forestry Woodchips only is available in Bulk. Humidity content varies, and can be > 14%. This material should be spread out promptly to less than 6'' thick. Leaving it in a pile could trigger composting, potentially decreasing its value and developing a fire hazard. More info on the benefits and limitations of wood mulch are available here.
