LARGE ANTIQUE STAFFORDSHIRE SPANIEL DOG, ENGLAND, CIRCA 1880–1910
A magnificent large-scale antique Staffordshire pottery spaniel distinguished by exceptional molded detail, rich russet coloration and a wonderfully naïve hand-painted expression. Standing 13 inches tall and weighing nearly four pounds, the spaniel was conceived as a substantial mantel ornament. Its narrow profile is paired with remarkably elaborate sculptural modeling: deeply formed waves of feathered fur travel across the ears, chest, forelegs and hindquarters before culminating in an impressive sweeping tail. Warm cream pottery provides the ground for extensive russet and caramel-brown glazing. Oversized painted eyes, dark brows, a black nose, golden-yellow muzzle and pendant collar complete the dog's wonderfully eccentric character. Research suggests an English Staffordshire origin and a likely late Victorian to Edwardian date, circa 1880–1910. Staffordshire dogs of this period were produced by numerous potteries, and surviving examples are frequently unmarked. We therefore attribute this piece to the Staffordshire tradition without assigning it to a particular manufacturer. Especially noteworthy is the condition. Despite its substantial scale and age, the spaniel survives in excellent antique condition with no cracks observed. A superb statement piece for a fireplace mantel, library, console or collected interior, and particularly at home among English country, grandmillennial, cottagecore and eclectic maximalist furnishings.
