Architectural Design 95:3 – Reimagining Architectural Drawing: Print and Process

Architectural Design 95:3 takes the printed drawing as both artefact and provocation, gathering a group of contemporary architects who work directly from an archive of print media to produce entirely new pieces. About This Book This issue of AD proceeds from a simple but generative premise: that tradition and precedent are not constraints on invention but its raw material. Guest-edited by Mark Dorrian, Riet Eeckhout and Arnaud Hendrickx, it stems from “The Sixth Somewhat Annual Meeting”, a project and exhibition at the a83 gallery in New York built around the John Nichols Printmakers Archive. Architects were invited to encounter printed drawings held in that archive and to transform them — producing new work through processes of reading, reworking and media translation. International contributors then respond critically to specific pieces, extending the discourse on architectural representation and its evolution through print. The concerns running through the issue are those of the archive itself: how dormant material becomes activated, how intricate physical objects can be read against the grain, and how disciplinary influence is inherited and repaid.
