Mid-Century 22ct Gold and Platinum Engraved 2.5mm Wedding Band by Charles Green & Son Ltd, 1951

A beautiful mid-century wedding band dating from 1951, made in rich 22ct buttery yellow gold with alternating platinum panels. The slender band has a subtly faceted outline, while each gold and platinum section is engraved with delicate scrolling and foliate decoration. The ring was assayed in Birmingham and bears the maker’s mark CG&S for Charles Green & Son Ltd. Charles Green was established in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in 1824, originally specialising in signet rings. More than two centuries later, the company remains a Birmingham jewellery manufacturer-a remarkable continuation of British jewellery-making history. Its 1951 date places the ring within a fascinating moment in British social history. Food rationing was still in place, and everyday life remained shaped by post-war austerity. Yet 1951 was also the year of the Festival of Britain, a national celebration of British design, science, industry and the arts, intended to encourage optimism and a sense of recovery after the war.
