Produced from 100% Montepulciano, Caprilius is one of Tenuta San Jacopo’s most distinctive wines, an unusual use of the variety in a corner of Tuscany dominated by Sangiovese. The organically farmed fruit comes from a tiny one-hectare vineyard at approximately 300 meters elevation with southeast exposure. After a long 25–30 day maceration, the wine completes malolactic fermentation in French oak tonneaux and ages for 18 months in tonneaux followed by 12 months in bottle. The 2018 is powerful and concentrated, with black plum, blackberry and dark chocolate layered with sage, peppermint, myrtle and savory balsamic notes, finishing full-bodied with supple tannins and impressive persistence. 93 Points — Luca Maroni
