Megamouth Shark - Fine Bone China Mug

The Megamouth Shark (Megachasma pelagios) is one of only three filter-feeding sharks alive today, alongside the Whale Shark and the Basking Shark. Found worldwide in tropical and temperate pelagic waters from the surface down to around 1,500 m, it spends its days in deeper waters and rises toward the surface at night, following the vertical migration of the krill, copepods and jellyfish it feeds on. Known from just 102 specimens as of 2015, the Megamouth is a rarely encountered animal with a distinctive appearance: an almost tadpole-like body, a huge broad head with thick rubbery lips, a silvery-lined mouth, and a bright white band across the snout visible only when the jaws are protruded. Females reach up to 7 m in length. Its name says it all: Megachasma is Greek for "great chasm", and pelagios means "of the sea".
